SWICA, one of Switzerland’s leading health insurers, provides its customers with a wide range of digital services - from customer portals and health apps to innovative e-health ecosystems.

To unify access and ensure the highest security standards, SWICA implemented an Identity & Access Management as a Service (IAMaaS) platform hosted in the CONVOTIS Cloud. The solution enables central logins, secure onboarding, and flexible two-factor authentication for more than 400,000 user accounts – highly available and future-proof.

Status quo

Before introducing the new solution, SWICA operated multiple independent login and user management systems for its online services.

This fragmentation resulted in repeated logins, inconsistent user experiences, and complex administration. Furthermore, scalability, seamless integration of new applications, and the use of modern authentication methods were limited – a significant disadvantage in an increasingly digital healthcare landscape.

The challenge

The objective was to establish a central Customer Identity & Access Management platform that would improve both security and user experience.

The new system needed to provide unified access to all services, seamlessly migrate existing accounts, and offer flexibility for future e-health applications. High availability and the integration of modern two-factor authentication methods were critical requirements.

The solution

CONVOTIS developed a central IAMaaS platform that securely integrates the services mySWICA, BENECURA, BENEVITA, Compassana, and Consulta.

More than 400,000 accounts were automatically migrated from legacy systems. Authentication is provided via FIDO or mTAN/SMS. The solution is built on a highly available PostgreSQL database distributed across two data centers. Dedicated PROD, TEST, and PLAY environments ensure continuous development and stable operations.

The result

With the new IAM platform, SWICA now operates a secure, scalable, and future-ready foundation for its digital services.

Customers benefit from single sign-on access, streamlined onboarding, and state-of-the-art authentication. For SWICA, the platform enables seamless integration of new applications and strengthens the quality of its digital healthcare services – a key step in advancing secure digitalization in the sector.
