Learning Management System for Task Distribution in Primary Education

The Lehrmittelverlag St. Gallen is a department within the canton’s Ministry of Education, responsible for providing learning media and educational infrastructure for primary schools.

As part of its digital strategy, the organization initiated a project to develop a web-based Learning Management System (LMS) to streamline how teachers assign, manage, and export tasks for students—designed to be user-friendly, secure, and scalable for future enhancements.

Status quo

Previously, teachers in the canton lacked a standardized system for managing and distributing school assignments digitally.

Tasks were handled individually, with no central tracking or archiving. The goal was to build a unified platform that simplifies assignment management and allows structured exports (PDF), role-based access, and multilingual use—supporting digital learning environments across all primary schools in the region.

The challenge

The core challenge was to implement a modern web application that meets the specific needs of public school workflows, including strict privacy requirements, varying user roles, and scalability.

The system needed to support teachers, classes, and students while allowing future modular expansion. Key features such as multilingual UI, task processing, and PDF export had to be delivered within a secure, flexible framework. Agile development was required to iterate quickly based on real classroom needs.

The solution

CONVOTIS developed a scalable MVP Learning Management System with modular design and role-based access.

Features include task processing, responsive layout, multilingual UI, and automated PDF export. Built with automated CI/CD pipelines, the system is expanded in two-week Scrum sprints. Hosting and support are included. The architecture allows future updates and integration of new modules without disruption—ensuring smooth rollout and maintainability throughout the entire school network

The result

Teachers and students now have access to a centralized LMS for assigning and managing school tasks. 

The system is mobile-friendly, secure, and multilingual. Assignments can be created, distributed, and exported in PDF format. Modular design supports future needs, and new features can be added based on user feedback. CONVOTIS also provides hosting, operations, and long-term technical support. Full rollout is scheduled for late 2025, with ongoing testing, training, and iterative feature delivery.
